Hunan Broadcasting Station with 500w transmitter was built in 1934, and extended to 1000w in the following year. It was one of the broadcasting stations of 1000w in the country at that time.
　　Nowadays, there are 12 broadcasting stations in the province. Among them, there is 1 of provincial level, 9 of area level, and 2 of county level. There are 19 sets of programs. Among them, there are 4 for provincial level, 3 of area level and 2 of county level. There are 26 middle wave and short wave transmitter and relay station with the transmitter power of 578kw. There are 58-kilowatt frequency modulation transmitter and relay stations with the transmitter power of 140.183kw. There are 24 experimental stations with the transmitter power of 93kw. There are 102 radio stations in the cities, and 2187 radio stations in the counties. The coverage of radio in the village is 55.5% and the rate for the family woodwind instrument is 27.51%. There are 82200km special cable broadcasting, and the average time of broadcasting by the radio station is 224 hours 45 minutes. The time for the self-made program is 200 hours 30 minutes. The people coverage by the broadcast is 79.11%. The making ability of the Hunan People’s Radio Station is 22355 hours every year. The making ability of the area, city and county radio station is 54621 hours every year.

The history of TV in Hunan began from 1960’s. On 1st, October 1960, the former Hunan TV station, Changsha TV station, broadcast black and white TV. But the radius of the coverage is only 10km. On 2nd, June 1962, it stopped broadcasting.
　　Now, there are 28 cable TV stations. Among them, there are 2 of provincial level, 14 of area level and 12 of county level. There are 31 sets of programs. Among them, there are 3 of provincial level, 16 of area level and 12 of county level. The broadcasting time every week is 1734 hours 2 minutes, and the time for the self-made program is 1413 hours 59 minutes. There is one cable TV station, which is approved by the Broadcasting and TV Bureau. There are 2 sets of programs and the broadcasting time every week is 224 hours. The number of the consumer is 200000. There is 105 cable TV station, which is approved by Hunan Broadcasting Bureau. There are 664 TV transmitters and relay stations with transmitter power of 272.860kw. There is 72-microwave station. The wire of microwave is 1768 km long (not including self-made microwave station and microwave wire by the area). There are 9693 satellite earth stations. The TV coverage per person is 88.16%.
Hunan TV and Broadcasting Center is the key project of provincial spirit construction with the total area of over 80000m?, and the total investment is over 300,000,000 Yuan. This project is opened in September 1994, and basically completed in 1998. It not only is the making center for broadcasting and TV, the transmitter center, news center and the making center, but also holds ’98 Chinese Middle-west talks for cooperation of economy and technology.
The broadcasting and TV propaganda is strengthened and improved. It makes great contribution to the service for the construction of modernization and reform and to the construction of two civilizations.
